To replace our undesired thoughts and feelings, we need to change our mindset, and for that, I prepared a list of 7 mindset shifts to try in the new year. Let’s go!

1. Forgive And Forget

Forgive And Forget

Before jumping into 2024, I would like to ask myself this question: “What are the things I want to carry from 2023 to the new year?”

Since every year has its ups and downs, the answer to that question would be a lot. But there are certain feelings that none of us would like to carry with us to the next year.

So, to start the new year with a feeling of lightness, you will need to forgive and forget. Practice the art of letting go to make room for the positive things in your life.

If you decide to carry all the weight from last year into the new one, you will be exhausted halfway and might even give up on your goals before getting started. Do the forgiveness for your peace.

Forgive yourself for letting yourself down, all the failures you committed over the past year, and every time you betrayed your trust for the sake of others.

Once you are past your mistakes, free yourself from hate and remorse inflicted upon you by others. These people can be your friends, family members, or any other acquaintance you had along the way.

The moment you let go of all the negativity surrounding your life, you will be more prepared for the blessings of 2024 and adopt a positive lifestyle in the new year.

2. Adapt A Positive Lifestyle

Adapt A Positive Lifestyle

If you are through the first step successfully, you are ready to take the next step, which is inviting more positivity into your life.

To work on this area, you will need to start by focusing on positive things, such as the blessings in your life, your happiness, your success, and many other things that are going to put you on the right path.

Gratitude can be a great start to shifting your mindset and seeing all the good in your life.

This does not mean that you will have to turn a blind eye to every bad occurrence in your life.

However, the purpose of this step is to highlight the feel-good moments instead of putting too much emphasis on what brings you down and drains you.

To show my gratitude and practice gratefulness, I always keep a notepad nearby to write down the small wins I experience every day.

I usually do it once a week to avoid being overwhelmed by the need to write something all the time.

If you want to practice gratefulness every day, try writing 3-5 things in your notepad, or if you prefer my once-in-a-week method, writing up to 10 things should suffice.

Other activities such as exercising, overcoming fears, and unlocking new achievements could also do wonders in creating a positive mindset.

3. Focus On Doing One Thing At A Time

Focus On Doing One Thing At A Time

Are you planning on overwhelming yourself with big goals and fighting day in and day out for your dreams? Just thinking about it makes me exhausted!

One thing I liked about Gretchen Rubin’s “The Happiness Project” was the focus on improving one area of your life every quarter of the year instead of trying to spread yourself thin!

And this is what I want you to do in 2024.

As one of my favorite mindset shifts for the new year, I would like to emphasize that doing one thing at a time is better than doing several things without finishing them up.

You could have four ultimate goals in the new year, which seems more reasonable than having tons of them.

The fewer goals you have, the more focused you will be on what you want.

If the number of your goals exceeds a certain number, you might finish the year trying to keep up with them, and when you fail to realize them, you will end up with nothing but frustration.

Enjoy the process of growing day by day and moving one step forward toward your goal.

Avoid putting too much pressure on yourself by doing everything all at once.

For instance, if you signed up for a 20-hour course, would you rather finish the course in 5 days and do 4 hours of studying per day, or would you spend 20 days doing 1 hour of work each day?

As though the first option seems more tempting, I think most of us would go with option B because it is not just about learning something but also forming the habit of consistency without getting tired.

Next up, I will tell you about boundaries.

4. Set boundaries

Set boundaries

Setting boundaries is all about learning the art of saying no. Consider a situation where you are asked to do something for free, how would you react?

If you are a people pleaser saying no would be like a death sentence to you. But ask yourself:  how long do you want to let people misuse your kindness and waste your time doing their work?

Learn the saying that time is money, and you can spend your hours improving your life instead of helping others achieve their dreams.

Never do something for free especially if there are people who are getting paid for the same services you do.

Value your time and let your friends and family know that they need to respect your goals as much as you respect theirs.

Tell them that there are certain behaviors that you will not tolerate.

Once you start respecting your boundaries and show others how much they matter to you, everyone will likely begin to respect your choice.

By setting boundaries, you will buy yourself more time and enjoy the serenity that comes with it.

This way, events such as family gatherings, vacations, and holidays will take on a whole new meaning.

If you warn people about crossing the red lines in your life, there is a huge chance that they will stop bothering you when you are enjoying your family’s company or taking a break from work.

This means no more unnecessary phone calls!

Next on my list of mindset shifts for the new year is celebrating your achievements by doing a monthly recap.

5. Do A Monthly Recap

Do A Monthly Recap

As you move ahead, keep track of your achievements, big or small, to give yourself a reason to celebrate your progress.

By the end of each month, look back at what you have achieved to give yourself a boost and remind yourself that your efforts haven’t gone to waste after all.

Did you finish the book that you have been reading lately?

Good for you! Did something happen at work to make you proud of yourself? Write that down!

List all the good things in your life and when it is time to go through them once again and prepare yourself for the reward you are going to get at the end.

Celebrate your life by going to your favorite restaurant, spending time with your friends, or buying that pair of shoes you have been dying to wear.

Do something that makes you happy and gives you the energy to carry on.

And if you want to do your monthly recap differently, you are free to do what you like.

If you want to cut down on your expenses and spend less time partying, I suggest you do a quarterly recap instead.

Every three months, reward yourself with something big and move forward stronger than ever.

To help you live a less expensive life, I think you will adore number 6 on my list of mindset shifts for the new year.

6. Less Is More

Less Is More

In the same way, you are planning to let go of your negative thoughts in the new year, you also need to do this with the materialistic side of your life.

To have a clear mindset, you can start by clearing out your house and donating the things you no longer need.

Or you can try starting a garage sale to let go of the unnecessary stuff.

Decluttering can help you give order to your mind as well as your life.

By holding on to the things that make you happy while also minimizing the things you own, you will teach yourself to be content with less.

For expenses, I usually ask myself this question, especially if I am planning on buying a new thing: “Do I want it?”

If the answer is yes, I then proceed to ask the second question, which is, “Do I need it?”.

The second question aims to clarify whether I can live without that object or not.

Most of the time, the answer is no, because not all the things are that vital that I cannot carry out a day or even a year without them.

As for productivity and doing less work while expecting the same results, I like to do more focused work instead of wandering with my thoughts when completing a task.

This can include avoiding any distractions while working.

7. Keep Your Promises

Keep Your Promises

The final step on my list of mindset shifts for the new year is keeping your promises.

Imagine if you promised yourself to finish the drawing you started last month.

Yet, it is already over your deadline, and you made no progress. How does this make you feel?

In the beginning, you might start comforting yourself by saying things like: “I still have time”, “I am going to do it eventually”, etc.

Giving your word and ending up betraying your trust is one thing, but if this turns into a habit, you might end up losing your self-confidence.

For people who are struggling with procrastination breaking promises would be a piece of cake.

However, if they want to enhance their self-esteem in 2024, they should ditch this damaging habit.

Once you are over your habit of postponing things, keeping the promises you made with yourself will be easier.

Teach yourself that the same way you are loyal to others, you also need to be loyal to yourself.

Make your list of priorities for the new year and put yourself at the top.

Similar mindset shifts tend to improve your way of seeing yourself as a reliant person.

Now that we have our 7 mindset shifts for the new year let me answer some of the questions you might have about this set of methods.

How Do I Create A New Mindset

How Do I Create A New Mindset

To create a new mindset, you need to invest in improving your thoughts and how you perceive the world.

If you are constantly focused on every bad thing that happens to you in life, you shouldn’t expect much in the future.

If a thought is bothering you deal with it. Grab a pen and a paper and give that thought shape and form through writing.

Mindset shifts for the new year are chosen to give you a better experience than last year, not the other way around.

The clearer your thoughts are, the better you will get at creating a new mindset.

And to start designing the shifts you want; you have to envision the traits of your future self by the end of 2024.

How do they look, what did they achieve, how many friends do they have, how many trips did they go on in 2024, and many more questions?

Ask these from yourself and try to picture that version.

Once you have an image of who you are by December of 2024, come back to the present moment and create your mindset based on that.
